The All Wales Passport in Manual Handling - Inanimate Load Handling

We can deliver this course on site in Cardiff and the South Wales area or at our training location in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The All Wales Passport in Manual Handling was originally developed by Health and Safety professionals within the NHS Trusts in Wales to ensure high standards and consistency of manual handling within the NHS in Wales thus allowing staff to transfer their skills when moving from trust to trust.  Such is its success that Welsh Local Authorities have now followed suit.

The course consists of 6 modules. Modules A and B relate to inanimate load handling and are delivered as a half day course

Syllabus Outline

The course includes:
Causes, types and consequences of musculo-skeletal injuries
Prevention of musculo-skeletal injuries
Current legislation
Ergonomics and risk assessment
Principles of safer handling of loads
Principles of team handling
Good communication
Inanimate load handling
Practical application of ergonomics

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this session the student should be able to:

  • Define the term ‘ Manual Handling’
  • Name activities and factors associated with musculo-skeletal injuries
  • Identify how a musculo-skeletal injury can affect the individual, the employer and society
  • Describe the basic structure of the spine
  • Identify back saving tips and other measures to prevent musculo-skeletal injuries and other disorders
  • Describe the management of injuries
  • Cite the relevant pieces of legislation and outline their implications
  • Outline employers’ and employees’ responsibilities
  • Define ergonomics and discuss its application in the workplace
  • Cite the principles of safer handling of loads
  • Identify the 4 key areas and other related factors to be considered when undertaking a safer handling risk assessment
  • Undertake a formal risk assessment of an inanimate load
  • Demonstrate the basic  warm-up/stretching exercises
  • Identify how the principles of safer handling can be applied to the moving of awkward loads
  • Outline the importance of good posture and the application of ergonomics principles
  • Safely demonstrate the following techniques:

    Pushing and pulling
    Lifting a load from the floor or low level
    Appropriate position whilst seated at office desk

Course Duration: half a day

Final Test:  students are continuously assessed as each topic is explained and discussed. Practical skills are demonstrated, discussed and then practised by the students

Certification: All Wales Passport
