CIEH Principles of COSHH Certificate

The qualification is designed for those who use substances hazardous to health at work. It introduces candidates to substances, the risks and controls available, and outlines what to expect from a control of sustances hazardous to health (COSHH) assessment. The qualification will prepare employees to contribute to the safer use of hazardous substances in their workplaces.

  • Definition and types of substances hazardous to health in the workplace
  • Health effects of hazardous substances and their causes
  • COSHH assessments and control options
  • Responsibilities imposed by the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999

Objectives

By the end of the course the student should be able to:

  1. Explain what it meant by the term ‘Substances Hazardous to Health’ and give examples
  2. Explain how hazardous substances can cause ill-health and injury and give examples
  3. State the different ways in which hazardous substances may be identified
  4. State the principles for controlling substances hazardous to health and apply these in a practical context
  5. Demonstrate a general understanding of the value and purposes of conducting a COSHH assessment and what employees can expect of such assessments
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of the main provisions of control of the Substances Hazardous to Health Regulation 1999.

Course Duration; Half a day

Final Test: Short Objective test of 20 questions

Refresher Course: It is recommended that a refresher course be undertaken every 3 years
