Principles of Moving and Handling
This is a half day introduction to the principles of moving and handling. It is aimed at those who might have to move and handle inanimate loads as part of their activities at work. The course covers all the topics recommended by the HSE
Topic areas covered
- manual handling risk factors and how injuries can occur;
- how to carry out safe manual handling including good handling techniques for lifting and for pushing
and pulling;
- appropriate systems of work for the individual’s tasks and environment;
- use of mechanical aids;
- practical work to allow the trainer to identify and put right anything the trainee
is not doing safely.

Objectives
By the end of the course the student will be able to:
- Explain how manual handling can cause injury and give examples;
- State the principles for controlling manual handling risks and apply these in a practical context;
- Demonstrate a general understanding of the value and purposes of conducting a manual handling assessment and what employees can expect of such assessments;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the main provisions of the Manual Handling Operations Regulations.
